It's hard enough to squeeze wedding planning into your busy life. But in the month of December, when Christmas shopping, holiday parties, and Hanukkah traditions are taking up all your time, how do you still plan a wedding and keep your sanity? Here are some holiday hints and multi-tasking ideas to help you out.

Get Organized
Remember that wedding planning notebook? Well, training yourself to be organized will help make other parts of your life easier as well, and the holidays are a great place to start. Buy another 3-ring binder with tab-dividers, small enough that you'll remember to bring it along and use it. Label the sections gift ideas, recipes, events, or whatever else you think you'll need. Put a pouch or two in to hold receipts and ideas torn from magazines, as well as a few pens for making on-the-go notes.

Wedding Invitation Lists
If you're already organized with your wedding invitation lists, sending Christmas cards should be a snap. If not, this is an excellent time to get organized. As everyone in your family is gathering addresses for their own lists, and seeing distant relatives at holiday gatherings, remember to ask for the missing addresses on your invitation lists. And, if you're sure that your Christmas card list is the same as your invitation list, you can include an informal save the date with your Christmas cards!

Find the Perfect Dress
Once upon a time, no one would be caught dead in a bridesmaid dress outside of a wedding. But these days, bridesmaid dresses are fun and modern. Take an afternoon to look for bridesmaid dresses, and keep an eye out for a fun outfit for New Year's Eve or the office holiday party at the same time!

Don't forget to take advantage of the After-Christmas Sales!
You may think after-Christmas sales are limited to buying that sweater your sister didn't get you. But when you're wedding planning, you can get some real bargains. Now is the time to pick up strands of lights for decorating your reception hall, and candles for the tables. Look for chocolates wrapped in red foil for favors, or using in out-of-town welcome bags. And you can extra-justify buying that sweater if you can wear it on your honeymoon.

Hold Try-Outs
Having people to your house or throwing a party? Now is the perfect time to try-out a wedding caterer, cake baker, or florist. If you're going the DIY route, you'll have an assembled audience to help you make sure not all 50 pieces of wedding cake go to waste. Order it before a big party, and hit two birds with one stone. Not only will you have inexpensive arrangements for your party, but you'll find out if you're really capable of doing your own flowers, and get some practice before the big day.

Have a Great Up-do and Perfect Makeup for Your Party
I've read many accounts of a bride going for a hair trial, only to run errands afterwards looking a bit silly. If you time things right, you can test out your wedding day hair and makeup at the big party, or holiday gathering.

Worried About Money?
If you and your family distribute Christmas wish lists, don't be afraid to include the wedding day shoes, jewelry or other accessories on your list. You can ask for gift certificates to the salon where you plan to have pre-wedding pampering, or even individual items such as the flower girl basket, wedding cake, or wedding day transportation.

Christmas Gifts, Hostess Presents, and Wedding Favors
If you're like most people, you've been invited to a slew of parties and open houses, and have a variety of what I call "random people" to buy presents for: work colleagues, the mailman, the kids' teachers. When you're shopping for wedding favors, keep an eye out for gifts to buy in bulk. Consider boxes of chocolates, bottles of olive oil, or bath products. And, if you're buying the wine for your wedding yourself, order an extra case to take as hostess presents.

Print your programs on paper fans.
Provide an outside table or bar with lemonade, ice tea, water, or even fun daiquiris or pina coladas prior to the ceremony start.
Have a few baskets stationed around the ceremony area with sunscreen, bugspray, and sunglasses for guests to use.
Have ushers escort people to their seats using parasols to block the sun. Ushers can then even give the parasols to the guests to use while they wait for the ceremony start. (Just be sure they direct guests to close the parasols once the ceremony begins so everyone can see.)

Outdoor weddings can be beautiful and memorable. Taking just a few steps to keep you guests cool will ensure that they enjoy the scenery and remember your wedding for the right reasons.

The time frame to schedule a run-through depends on what type of stylist you are using. If you are using a hair and makeup artist at a hotel spa, I suggest waiting until about two months prior to the wedding; that way it is more likely that the person with whom you do the run-through will still be employed at the spa when your wedding day comes around.

4 Cs of diamonds
Cut
The cut refers to the proportions (i.e., height, width) and facets of a diamond. A well-cut stone reflects more light, creating more sparkle. Cut does not refer to the diamond's shape, such as round brilliant, pear or marquise.
Color
Diamonds come in a range of colors, from colorless to faint yellow, brown, pink, blue, and green. A colorless diamond allows white light to pass through it and be dispersed as rainbows of color. Perfectly colorless diamonds are rare.
Clarity
Most diamonds contain very tiny natural inclusions, which are minerals trapped inside the stone. The fewer inclusions, the more light can pass through the stone. A diamond does not necessarily need to be flawless to be beautiful.
Carat-weight
This is the weight of the diamond measured in carats. Each carat is divided into 100 points. A diamond that is 50 points weighs .50 carats.
Gemstone shapes
Brilliant or round
This is a faceted cut that produces the greatest brilliance in a diamond. It has 58 facets—33 are above the girdle and 25 are below. Traditionally, brilliant has been the most popular cut and is usually widely available.
Single
A round diamond cut with 18 facets, used mostly for smaller stones.
Fancy
Any diamond cut other than a round brilliant or single cut, such as marquise, pear, and emerald.
Marquise
Resembles an oval that tapers to points at both ends.
Pear
A pear or teardrop with a point at one end.
Emerald
Usually rectangular but, sometimes, square cut. The stone is cut with rows of facets along the edges and corners that resemble steps.
Princess
A modified brilliant square-cut diamond. A princess cut may be more prone to having the corners chip, but this can be minimized with a setting that protects the four corners

5 Bridesmaid Beauty Tips

The job of a bridesmaid is not an easy one. There’s dress shopping, engagement parties and bridal showers, not to mention comforting the bride during any mental meltdowns! One thing that you shouldn’t have to worry about is looking beautiful (but not more beautiful than the bride!) on the big day. We sat down with New York City based makeup artist Danielle Minnella and got 5 beauty tips that will keep you looking fabulous on your bride’s wedding day.

1. Wear similar makeup palettes.

Bridesmaids should be very natural looking and should also be wearing a similar makeup palette. Remember you don’t want to outshine the bride!

2. Use neutral colors.

(Leave the funky blues and greens at home ladies!) Shades of brown and rose can work together to create a very pretty look. Other neutral colors, such as gray, taupe and vanilla are also very complimentary to any eye color. You may even sneak in a plum color! Remember to use an eyelid primer prior to your shadow for staying power (NOT concealer - it creases up).

3. Long-wearing foundation is key.

A wedding day is typically a very long day for a bride and her bridesmaids. Therefore, you want to choose a foundation that has lasting power. What helps foundation last longer? Face primer! Use some prior to your foundation. Also keep a translucent powder in your purse for touchups so you can lose the shine if needed (especially before the wedding photos!).

4. Use black waterproof mascara.

Eyelashes tend to disappear in photographs, and a nice black mascara will help them to stand out. (Double check that it’s waterproof, just in case of tears!)

5. Apply some lip balm.

A little balm applied under your lip color will give you a nice base that will help the color last longer. Be sure to choose a natural shade!

What to do with your bridesmaid dress after the wedding?

If you have ever been a bridesmaid and have a dress (or two, or three) packed away in a closet somewhere, you might wonder if anything useful can be done with the dress after the wedding. Depending on the dress, and how you feel about it, there are plenty of options on what to do with that dress, even after the bouquet has been thrown.

Keep It?
- Before deciding to significantly change or get rid of the dress outright, decide if it could be worn for any other event in the future. Many bridesmaid's dresses can be worn with different accessories and be used for another formal occasion or as a cocktail dress. Decide if your dress might be paired with a sweater, jacket or tights and different shoes to suit a different purpose.
  If you feel that you will be able to wear your dress again in some capacity, consider getting it cleaned after the event. It is usually a good idea to bring a formal dress to the dry cleaners after it is worn, in order to keep it in good condition for wearing again. Some dry cleaner's specialize in preserving formal dresses, so if you wish to wear it again, consider bringing it to a specialist.
Change It?
- If your dress is not the type of dress that you believe you will be able to wear again, you might consider wearing it with a few alterations. Most dresses can easily be hemmed into more wearable lengths. Sleeves can often be removed, and sometime necklines can be changed, too. A more formal and fuller skirt can also be taken in for a slimmer and less formal fit. At the very least, you might want to take the dress to a seamstress to see what basic alterations she could recommend for the dress, and what the cost would be to perform them. You might be surprised to find an entirely new dress that is now wearable.
Get Rid of It?
- If you know there is no way you will ever wear the dress again, then you should consider selling or donating it. Try selling it to a thrift or consignment shop. Many consignment shops will give you a share of the profits if the dress sells, and they will let you have it back if it doesn't sell after a stated period of time. A thrift store might give you a smaller amount of money for the dress, but will buy it from you outright instead of making you wait until it sells to get the profits. It's a good idea to try to bring the dress to a thrift or consignment store around spring or fall before homecoming and prom season. You might also try selling the dress online to avoid a middleman taking a cut of some of the profits. If you would rather donate the dress, look into organizations and charities that take formal dresses and donate them to women and girls in need.

At Royal Weddings in Danbury (its name inspired by the Charles and Diana nuptials and started up a year later), the William and Kate wedding will be marked with a shop-wide sale of wedding gowns to be followed shortly, no doubt, there and elsewhere, by gowns with a startling resemblance to Princess Kate's.

At Julie Allen's bridal boutique in Newtown, a customer came in recently to purchase a pair of white gloves to wear to a wedding-related reception, according to Allen.
"Our society has become so loose in its customs," Allen observed. "If people come away from this wedding paying more attention to details of etiquette, I think that would be wonderful."
Allen was 24 and unmarried when she rose early to watch the wedding of Charles and Diana, but she'll watch a taped version this time.
The wedding will likely have fashion repercussions as the royal bride makes a fashion statement in her gown, the details of which remain a well-kept secret.

Consider printing your wedding program on a fan so that guests may cool themselves. Don't forget to have plenty of sunscreen on hand as well. For a very warm location, look into renting large electric fans (don't forget a generator) and/or a tent to shade the suns rays. If it will be cold and damp, make sure you tell guests that so they can wear extra layers. A simple xeroxed insert will do. You might want to have lap blankets on hand, or rent portable heaters.
Have a backup plan What will you do if it rains? The ideal outdoor wedding location has an indoor location waiting just in case. Many brides and grooms opt to have their ceremony outside and reception inside. In a pinch, the tables can be scooted to the back of the room during the ceremony. A tent is another option, but only for light to moderate rain storms. A heavy rain will soak the ground underneath, leaving guests with soggy and muddy shoes. Make sure any tent you rent is sturdy so it won't flip over, and that it has thick and weighted sides.
Plan for Wind Many outdoor weddings suffer from windy conditions. Avoid light fabrics like chiffons and china silks in your dress and the bridesmaid dresses. Tell your hairstylist that you'll be having an outdoor wedding so she/he can plan a style that won't leave you looking like Cousin It! Men in the wedding party should use pomade or other styling product. Again, tell your guests in a printed insert so that they can plan accordingly. And of course, make sure your tent will stand up to gusting winds or find an indoor backup plan.
Can everybody hear? When you picture your dream wedding at the beach, you're probably not hearing the roaring of the waves, the rushing wind, or the local kids running and screaming around you. Look into renting a sound system with clip mikes for the bride, groom and officiant. Your DJ or band may be able to easily arrange this for you.
Decorations One of the bonuses of an outdoor wedding is the natural beauty around you, lessening your need to decorate. But you still need to do some work. Visit the site a week before your wedding to make sure the grass is mown, the ground raked, and the flowers have bloomed. If your wedding is at a public park, you may want to ask the groomsmen or friends to do this the morning of your ceremony. If it's been an especially cold season, you may need to supplement the flowers with some potted bulbs from a florist. Other decorations you may want to consider include an arch or trellis to focus the ceremony and frame the bride and groom as they say their vows; strings of lights or lanterns in the trees; luminarias; torches; or farolitas.
Make things tasty outside Does your caterer have experience planning an outdoor wedding menu? Make sure they're planning things that will keep well outdoors in the heat. Avoid things like mayonnaise salads or dishes which must be served cold.
Don't leave your guests parched Since alcohol is dehydrating, consider serving a variety of lemonades, teas and punches. Be sure to have plenty of ice and water around as well. For a fancy cocktail, why not serve a classic mint julep or a mojito? The mint will refresh and cool your guests.
Those pesky flying things Be sure to put out citronella candles or a bug zapper so that your guests won't spend the whole ceremony swatting at the air.
Here comes the sun Consider timing your outdoor wedding for sunset where your guests will see you take your vows surrounded by the warm glow of the sun. Those having a daytime outdoor wedding should orient the ceremony so that the sun will be on guests' backs rather than in their eyes.
Permits Don't forget to contact your city parks department or other local government to get a permit for an outdoor wedding. Be sure to ask about rules concerning trash removal, candle or torch lighting, and pre-wedding photography.

Tips on Preserving Your Wedding Gown

Every bride should protect her investment by having her wedding gown professionally cleaned and stored. An expert dry cleaner or gown preservationist can make certain that your heirloom dress is protected from soil and age so it looks as new in 20 years as it did the day you wore it.
It’s all too common to find, years later, that your wedding gown wasn’t properly cleaned. Spills are lethal to a dress. Body oils turn the fabric yellow. If a dress isn’t cleaned properly, stains appear and are sometimes difficult to remove. And if the dress is poorly made, it may fall apart when it’s dry-cleaned.
Not every bride chooses to pack her wedding gown away in a box. It is perfectly acceptable to have your gown altered for use as a dress for special occasions. You should have your dress properly cleaned within 1 – 6 months after the wedding to preserve its beauty. You may not see them, but white wine and champagne stains will turn the fabric in a few months.
Here are more tips:
*Find a dry cleaner that advertises expert cleaning of wedding gowns. Ask the cleaner if he/she uses different solvents on gowns than on regular clothing. Standard solvents are too harsh for wedding gowns. These gowns must be cleaned with the gentlest cleaners in an acid-free environment.
*Ask if you can see the dress before it is packed. That way, you can see for yourself if all visible stains have been removed prior to storage.
*Wedding gowns should be stuffed with clean, acid free tissue. Acid-free tissue placed between the folds of the dress and stuffed in the bodice will prevent permanent wrinkles and folds as well as help stabilize the environment of the box.
*All shoulder pads, perspiration shields, and anything else made of foam should be removed from the gown. These materials don’t have a good shelf life, and when they deteriorate, they can ruin the material next to them.
*Also, avoid packing your gown with plastic or metal buttons, pins or buckles. You should NEVER keep mothballs or crystals near your gown, since the chemicals in these products can ruin the fabric over time. The gown may be wrapped in muslin and folded neatly into a cardboard box.
*Never hang your wedding gown for long-term storage and never seal the box completely. The gown will need proper air circulation. Once your gown is cleaned and boxed, store it in a closet or under a bed.
*Don’t put the gown in a hot attic or a cold basement. Extreme temperature changes can also damage your gown.
*Don’t be afraid to take your gown out of the box and look at it from time to time. That way, you’ll be sure the most important dress of your life is successfully standing the test of time. The gown should be refolded to prevent permanent creases and white cotton gloves should be worn while handling the gown to prevent oily fingers from making contact with the fabric.
*The cost of professionally cleaning and storing your dress can range from $75 – $600, depending on its size, fabric and detailing.
*To cut down on cost, you can pack away your gown yourself, but only after it has been professionally dry-cleaned. To do this, you will need a large box, tissue paper, and a cotton liner. Cedar chests can also be used instead of a box. Carefully arrange the bodice and skirt to avoid wrinkling, and crumple tissue paper in major folds to prevent hard creasing. Never use plastic or brown boxes. They contain materials that are harmful to the fabric.
No other garment will ever mean more to you than your wedding gown. Whether you choose to pass it on to your daughter or simply keep it as a permanent record of your wedding day, your gown deserves special attention. By cleaning and storing it properly, you will have a lasting and well-preserved memento that you can treasure forever.

Cupcake Display Ideas

Cupcake Trees – Of course, most everyone has heard of cupcake trees. However, play them up and make them unusual. Make the tiers round, square or a unique shape. Make them your own. A display that will represent the theme of your wedding or event. If you use a cupcake tree, incorporate the elements of your wedding or even into it.
Use ribbon or scrapbook paper for the cupcake tiers to incorporate your wedding colors or party theme into it. Make it an odd shape, start with the smaller tier first and get bigger as you go up. Or create a tree out of your cupcake tower, where it actually looks like a tree. There are all sorts of unique things that you can do with a cupcake tower, just get creative!
Flower Pots – Yes, flower pots are great ways to display cupcakes! It can serve as a centerpiece, delicious treat and even a party favor. As part of our cake week videos, we are giving you a how-to video on cupcake flower pots. They sound so adorable, right? All you need is a styrofoam ball, cupcakes, flower pot and icing.
Bake the cupcakes like you normally would, ice them like you normally would or put fun designs on it and stick them into the styrofoam ball with toothpicks. Arrange them like you normally would flowers in a centerpiece. To fill it the gaps, ice green icing in them to make it look like grass or actually use Easter grass. It makes for a fun display!
Vintage Cake Stands -Vintage cake stands are so divine for any party. You can find them in various colors with unique designs that would be great for a shabby, chic wedding or event. Use different colors and designs and pair them with different textured and colored cakes. Make a table completely dedicated to cakes with vintage cake stands. It will truly be an attraction at any wedding or event.

Replica – Another fun idea that you can do when using cupcakes is actually make a replica of something. This would be ideal for a special event or birthday party. Just bake cupcakes, ice them in the colors that you want and get to creating. Place them out on the table to resemble a flag or a flower or even a pirate ship. These would be great as birthday cakes!
For example, use pink cupcakes for the petals, yellow cupcakes for the middle and then green cupcakes for the stem and leaves. All you have to do is make sure you have enough space on the table and lay the cupcakes out in that design. It's like you're drawing a flower out of cupcakes!
If you're really creative, carve a design out of styrofoam or even wood. Use toothpicks and icing to hold the cupcakes in place on the 3d sculpture. How fun would that be! Maybe your son loves race cars, well make him a race car out of cupcakes! It would truly be a unique sight to see!

How To Survive The First Dance

Admit it: you are just a little worried about the first dance. Between the two of you you’ve got four left feet. Or maybe you’re just haunted by memories of watching other people’s bad wedding dances. Whatever the case, we’re here to help with some advice.
If you have never danced together and neither of you knows how to dance, you will need some form of instruction. This can be as formal as private lessons at a ballroom studio or as casual as asking a friend who dances to show you a few moves. Just don’t assume that you will magically figure it out on the big day without ever having done it before. Sadly, achieving wedded bliss doesn’t confer immediate Fred and Ginger status on you (if only it did!).
You should also be aware that dance styles (by which I mean waltz, foxtrot, salsa, swing, et cetera) are dictated by music. You may not need to learn waltz for your first dance; maybe your song choice is a Sinatra ballad to which you would actually dance foxtrot. This is the kind of information that a professional dance teacher or a good instructional videotape can give you. If you don’t really have a song that’s “our song,” you can check out the suggestions on this website.
To dance together comfortably and without stepping on each other’s toes, you will need to understand lead and follow. Typically the gentleman leads and the lady follows, although it’s not absolutely necessary that you do that. But remember, leading involves steering. It’s like driving a car: even if both of you know how, only one of you can drive at a time!
Lead and follow requires that you line up your feet properly (parallel to and facing each other, lady slightly on the gentleman’s right side, right foot pointing between each other’s feet) and that you hold each other and use your arms in such a way that the gentleman can steer and the lady can feel the steering. It’s a little difficult to explain these concepts in print. Once again, an instructor, a dancing friend, or a good instructional tape can help you.
Once you’ve picked a song and identified the dance style to do to it, don’t feel obligated to dance the entire song. You may not realize it, but professional dance numbers usually run no more than 3 minutes, tops, and for good reason. Your DJ or your band can easily edit or condense your song, or can simply fade it at a pre-determined moment. Make sure that whoever is going to play the song knows what you expect, particularly in terms of tempo (how fast the song should be played) and duration (how long the song should be played).
To avoid unpleasant surprises on the big day, practice in advance. That means, try dancing together to the song in clothing that approximates your wedding attire. Ladies: wear your shoes and a skirt that’s like that of your gown. If you are concerned about smudging your shoes, put a pair of your fiancé’s old athletic socks on over them.) This will not only make you more comfortable during the dance, but during the entire wedding, since it’s a great way to break in your shoes. Gentlemen: wear dress shoes and a jacket, so that you become accustomed to the slight constraint through your arms. Also try to dance in a space comparable to the dance floor at your reception site. Dance at public events whenever possible – a friend’s wedding, a bar mitzvah, the office Christmas party. Just get used to moving with each other and you’ll automatically get better at it.
Finally, take all this advice – but not too seriously. After all, your first dance is NOT the most important thing that will happen on your wedding day. And who knows, it might even be fun!

You will be hit with all types of pleas to allow children. Stand your ground and be firm, but nice.
A good way to head off any problems would be to get your wedding party in on spreading the verbal word that this is an adult only wedding and reception.
Write or visit friends and relatives who have kids and explain to them why you've made a choice to not have children.
Be forward and blunt with any guest who tells you they will be brings their kids. Tell them, "I am sorry, but we aren't able to accommodate any children".
They may retort back with, "We won't be attending your wedding". At that point tell them your sorry they made that decision and they will be missed.
One thing you might consider is by setting age limits, for example no children under 10. If you're afraid that cousin Jen's little boy will cause a ruckus just as you're sharing your vows during your wedding ceremony, hire a child-care and set aside a room for the kids. This way you can enjoy a beautiful wedding sans the wails of a fussy child, but they can still come to the wedding reception.
Remember it is your wedding and your choice to make on who is invited. Stand firm and make no exceptions. By standing firm, you may very well hurt guests feelings so much that they may not attend the wedding. As you make your decision to say no children and have an adults only wedding, be sure that you can accept that your favorite friend or relative won't attend. Create a wedding that is truly special to you and fits your needs.

What Is It?

The rehearsal dinner is a practice party traditionally hosted by the groom's parents on the eve of the wedding. A formal rehearsal of the ceremony is not mandatory, but most officiants will want to run through the service with the bride, groom, their parents, the wedding party, and any readers, giving everyone their cues for the next day. If you have a slew of attendants this is a good time to get them familiar with the layout of the ceremony location and make sure they know the order they're walking in -- as well as an opportunity to go over what time to be there on the wedding day, and any other last-minute details.

Mingle your guests. The dinner is a great opportunity for both of your families to get better acquainted before the wedding day.

After the rehearsal -- usually held at the church/ceremony site -- everyone gathers for a celebratory dinner, where the bride and groom are roasted and toasted (go easy on the toasting; you do have to get married the next day!). The dinner is a great opportunity for your two families to get better acquainted before the wedding day. You may also present the wedding party with thank-you gifts during the course of the evening.

Who Hosts?

Traditionally, the groom's family throws this fete, but these days it's up for grabs. You two might take matters into your own hands, or both sets of parents may choose to do the honors together. See if there's room in your wedding budget.

Many are held in hotel banquet rooms, or restaurants, with full-course dinners and desserts (some have a distinct resemblance to a wedding reception!). At the very least, the wedding guest list includes immediate family (parents and siblings), wedding-party members and any spouses and significant others, and the parents of any child attendants (inviting the children themselves is optional). You should also invite the officiant and his/her spouse to the dinner.
If many out-of-town guests are invited to the wedding, they may also be invited to the rehearsal dinner, especially if there are many who will have already arrived in town for the wedding. If you'd rather have the rehearsal be an intimate affair but don't want to leave other guests hanging, think about having the rehearsal two nights before the wedding day -- on Thursday night for a Saturday wedding -- and then having a welcome party for out-of-towners on Friday night instead.

What Happens?

A few elements are generally incorporated into the festivities:
Toasting: This is a great opportunity to thank your loved ones -- there probably won't be time to publicly toast everyone at the wedding reception itself. As host of the party, the groom's father often goes to bat first, toasting his soon-to-be daughter-in-law and her family; the groom also says a few words.
Giving gifts: You may choose to give your attendants their thank-you gifts at this shindig. Make sure to also present your parents and anyone else who was an integral part of the wedding-planning process with a token of your appreciation -- flowers, a nice bottle of wine, or even a huge hug will do.

Here are some wedding traditions that couples in China, Morocco, and many other places have been using for hundreds of years.

Wedding Traditions in Italy

When: In Italy, wedding festivities usually kick off in the morning, ideally on a Sunday. According to regional Italian folklore, you should never marry (or leave for your honeymoon) on a Friday or Tuesday, or you’re bound to have loads of bad luck, while Saturdays are reserved for widows getting hitched to husband number two (or three, or four...).
Attire: Don’t bother with makeup since in addition to a white gown, you’ll wear a veil -- a symbol of virginity (don’t worry, it’s just for show). Tearing the veil, however, is considered good luck (Why? Just use your imagination). Meanwhile, the groom can lug a piece of iron (preferably a small one) in his pocket to ward off evil spirits.
Activities: Traditional Italian brides and grooms forgo the limo and make it to the chapel on foot. In certain villages, residents throw symbolic obstacles in your path to suss out your future as man and wife: If a broom lands at your feet and you pick it up, for example, you’ll be one helluva housecleaner. After the wedding ceremony, the couple shatters a glass or vase -- and does their best to pulverize it, since the number of pieces represents the amount of years they’ll stay happily married. If someone hands you a double-handed saw, you and the groom must cut a log in half to prove you can work together without driving each other insane.
The Food: A roasted baby pig or lamb accompanied by wanda, bow ties of fried dough dipped in powdered sugar. Women sip Marsala wine, men guzzle the much stronger grappa (go ahead and guess who’s in store for a hangover). Confetti -- sugar-covered almonds (or Jordan almonds, as we know them) representing the bitter and sweet of life -- serves as snacks or, yes, projectiles thrown at the newlyweds as they make their exit.
The Music: Possibly a jaunty jig called the tarantella. Legend has it that a woman who was once bitten by a poisonous tarantula cured herself by shakin’ her booty better than Beyoncé on a very good day. The least it can do for you is to keep you from passing out due to too much Marsala.
Added Perk: Money -- lots of it. Forget toasters and towels: Guests place cold, hard cash in a white satin bag called la borsa.

Wedding Traditions in China

When: Depends on your astrologer. Chinese couples may consult a fortune-teller to find a favorable date derived from their birth dates.
Attire: Brides may forgo the white wedding gown in lieu of a fire-engine red silk dress that’s intricately embroidered with a dragon and phoenix. If you think choosing one dress is tough, check this out: Chinese brides buy as many dresses as their budgets allow and change from one to the other throughout the wedding to show their family is not strapped for cash.
Activities: At the break of dawn on the big day, your loyal bridesmaids get to give your husband-to-be a hard time, forcing him to negotiate his way into your house. Once your gal pals are satisfied with his offerings and deem him worthy of entering, a ritual tea is served to your family while you and your honey drink wine out of goblets that are tied together with red string or paper, which signifies your bond.
The Food: Leave room for a 10- to 12-course banquet -- another way families flaunt their wealth. The flashiest dish served is shark’s fin soup, which will drain anyone’s bank account quickly at $150 per guest. Other delicacies include bird’s nest soup (yes, made from real birds’ nests) and a whole fish, which is served because the word for fish, yu, sounds similar to the word for abundance.
The Music: Guests get in touch with their wild sides and enjoy a performance called the lion dance, in which performers dressed as powerful felines sway to the beat of drums, gongs, and cymbals to scare away evil spirits.
Added Perk: Even after the wedding feast, guests traditionally follow the couple into their bedroom, making as much noise as possible and taunting them. Then, as if they need any prompting, the newlyweds are encouraged into faux acts of intimacy as part of the game. Guests typically try to stay in the room for three days -- or as long as they can before the privacy-starved couple kicks them out. Call it a perk or a complaint, but you’ll get plenty of time with your friends!

When: In the evening around 9 p.m.
Attire: The bride might don a brightly colored, Flamenco-style dress with ruffles at the hem. But the groom gets off easy: Rather than sweating to death in a tux, he’ll most likely wear a guayabera. The Food: Spicy rice, beans, and tortillas. Save room for the wedding cake, which is made with nuts and dried fruit -- and soaked in enough rum to get everyone slurring during their toasts.
The Music: As the bride and groom dance, guests gather around in the shape of a heart. Then things can get a little saucy: The couple forms an arch with their upheld arms, and single women dancing la vibora (the snake dance) pass through until the couple captures one of them. Then the single guys dance until one gets caught and lays claim to the bride’s garter belt. You know what happens from there.
Added Perk: Bridal servants called madrinas (godmothers) are at your beck and call, making the plans and arranging bouquets -- so you don’t need to lift a finger.

When: Moroccans commonly celebrate weddings on Sundays in the fall at the end of the harvest, when there’s plenty of food to feast on.

On the fifth and sixth, more parties. On the seventh, the bride is held aloft in front of friends and family and then placed in the arms of her groom, signaling the end of the ceremony. The couple departs in a shower of figs and raisins but even then, it isn’t over: Once she arrives at her new home, the bride might circle the house three times to establish ownership before she can go to sleep.
The Food: Fish and chicken, ancient symbols of fertility, are often served. Guests may also dig into tajine (a chicken stew mixed with almonds, apricots, onions, and other spices that’s served with pita bread) and plenty of those candy-covered almonds, which are considered aphrodisiacs.
The Music: Belly dancers often usher the bride and groom into the reception in a parade formation called the zeffa. There, guests may also boogie down to the Middle Eastern sounds of drums, tambourines, and a string instrument called a zither.
Added Perk: Sure the wedding’s exhausting, but Moroccan brides do get to indulge -- namely, in massages and milk baths to purify themselves for the big day (er, week).

Haven't the first clue on how to word your wedding invitations? Options may seem endless, but if formality suits you, wedding invite wording is easy as ABC.

Traditional Wording

It is customary in a formal wedding invitation to spell out everything, including the date and time of the wedding. For example, the invite should read Five o'clock in the evening not 5:00 p.m. Each bit of information occupies its own line and no commas are used, except between the location of the wedding and the city and state in which it will take place.

In its simplest form, the sequence of lines usually follows this order:

Spring Wedding Myths Busted

Spring may be the traditional season for weddings, but it doesn't mean your wedding has to be by the book. Here are some of the "rules" you're allowed to break.

Spring is the time of year most often associated with weddings, so you might feel there are even more expectations about what kind you should have. But we're here as always to tell you that the kind of wedding you should have is the kind that works for you! We've broken down some of the most common assumptions about spring weddings to help you make your own rules.

Myth #1: You must use pastel colors
Though some spring brides embrace the colors traditionally associated with the season, others cringe at Easter egg-inspired hues. If you find yourself in the latter category, go with a color scheme that fits your style best. Pulling off an unexpected palette gives your wedding an element of surprise that will wow your guests. If you want to go with a seasonally appropriate but still unconventional choice, take the pastels up a few notches and go with brighter hues like hot orange, acid green, and magenta.

Myth #2: You have to have flowers everywhere
On the one hand, spring is a bride's bonanza for flowers -- a huge variety of blooms are in season and easy to get. But if flowers aren't your thing, there are lots of options for creating interesting and unusual decor. One way is to incorporate other kinds of natural elements into your centerpieces: Think moss, wheatgrass, river rocks, or herbs. While these will still evoke a spring-like feel of freshness and rebirth, there's not a flower in sight. Want something more dramatic? Towering, blooming branches like cherry blossoms, quince, or dogwood look modern and incorporate some flowers without being in-your-face. Best of all, they look great anywhere -- whether on the altar or on your reception tables.

Myth #3: You have to have a daytime wedding
Dreaming of an evening affair? Don't let the season stop you. Some associate spring with a brunch reception. Brunches are beautiful, but they're not the best option if you want to have an all-out dance party. Though the days are getting longer, you can still wait until sunset (or even later) for your ceremony. If you want a daytime wedding -- particularly outdoors -- go ahead and take advantage of the fair weather. Spring's milder temperatures make a midday wedding much more comfortable than it would be in the heat of summer.

Myth #4: You have to stay inside
We know, we know -- April showers. While in many places early spring (in other words, March) can be unpredictable, don't rule out an outdoor wedding for the entire season. The elements will be a factor in an outdoor celebration at any time of year, but rather than giving up on going al fresco, just plan ahead. When you're looking at ceremony and reception sites, ask what other couples had done as a rain plan and whether any changes needed to be made. Get the details on those other spaces so if you're planning to have 200 guests, you won't choose a site where the indoor space can only hold 120. Another option: Reserve a just-in-case tent.

Myth #5: Your attire should be informal
The weather's warmer so hemlines can be higher. Sure, your bridesmaids won't have to worry about freezing in tea-length dresses, but it doesn't mean you have to have them. If floor-length is more your style, that's just fine. Same goes for your gown and the guys' attire. Though a light-colored linen suit would be perfectly apropos for some springtime affairs, if a classic tux better suits the tone of your wedding, go for it. No matter what time of year you're marrying in, the main thing that's important is comfort -- so if you love the look of satin dresses but are worried your maids will be melting, choose a similar style in a more forgiving fabric like a silk blend.

Two Mays ago my good friend, Robin, got married to a wonderful man named Steve... She had a lovely Spring wedding. Everything was brown and blue, there were chocolate covered pretzel favors and Gerber Daisies everywhere...

She also had a very lovely cake. Robin told me all about her baker, Kelly from Kelly's Sweet Rewards in Brookfield, Connecticut. She also told me about these amazing little "Cake Balls"

Which are apparently cake and frosting mixed together then the balls are dipped into chocolate. Yes that sounds amazing to me.
